Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
