Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.
