Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
